ऐसा हो तो कैसा होगा, आप हो पास तो दिन ढ़ले

Ratnadeep (1979) was a movie produced and directed by Basu Chatterjee with Girish Karnad and Hema Malini in lead roles. In that era, Basu Chatterjee made several hit films, though this one did not quite click at the box office. Seen in the picture below is Basu Chatterjee directing Hema Malini during the filming of Ratnadeep.

The story revolves around Madan (Girish Karnad) impersonating Hari Prasad (who looked like him).  Hari Prasad was very rich man but had taken sanyas 7 years earlier leaving his young wife Rani  (Hema Malini).  When Hari Prasad had gone missing, he was presumed to have died. After 7 years, Hari Prasad wanted to return to his normal life and had written a letter explaining all this, but before he could post it he died. 

This song is by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle, music is by Rahul Dev Burman and lyrics are by Gulzar.

The story seems to have been inspired by Bhawan Sanyasi case, a case that went all the way to the Privy Council in London and had appeared several times on the front page of newspapers in Kolkata in the '30s and early '40s.
